Why
is Protein skimming necessary?
Protein skimming, also known as foam fractionating, is considered
one of the most important filtration techniques by most marine
aquarists. It's primary purpose is to remove DOC's, dissolved
organic compounds, from the water before they breakdown into
nitrogenous waste. Nitrogenous waste, like proteins and nitrates,
are the primary culprits for poor water quality which, can lead
to aggressive algae growth, nitrate buildup and less than stellar
water clarity. The protein skimmer through its' removal of these
wastes facilitate the job of your existing aquarium filter by
lightening its' load and allowing it to function more efficiently,
reducing the amount of time it takes to perform routine maintenance.
